A Stranger Asked Me How Old I Am…

A stranger asked me how old I am. Not something you hear every day- especially not in an airport line.

Yesterday, as I was boarding my flight home from a healthcare conference in Columbus, Ohio, I was speaking into my phone, letting voice-to-text do its thing.

The older man standing behind me watched, wide-eyed. “Wow! How are you doing that?” he asked. I smiled and said, “Here- take out your phone.” I showed him the little microphone button at the bottom and told him to tap it.

Then, with a grin, I leaned in and spoke into his phone: “I owe the lady in front of me $100.” We both laughed, and a few people around us chuckled.

A moment later, he shook his head and said, “I just can’t believe I didn’t know this! How old are you? Maybe it’s a generational thing.”

That moment summed up what stood out to me over my two days at the OHCA healthcare conference, where owners, administrators, clinicians, and innovators came together, learning from each other across generations.

It was a reminder of how powerful curiosity can be- especially when we’re connecting across generational lines.

Curiosity isn’t just about asking questions; it’s about exploring new ways to communicate, adapt, and grow.

Brands that stay curious- who listen, explore new tools, and pay attention to how people communicate- are the ones that stay relevant. Whether you’re speaking to seniors, millennials, or Gen Z, showing genuine interest in their world builds trust and creates lasting connections.

At its core, curiosity is about constantly seeking to understand how things evolve, how new methods can be applied, and how to make them work for your brand.

By leaning in and staying curious, you open the door to new opportunities that keep your brand fresh, relatable, and ready for the future.
