How Weight Watchers lost their brand

Turns out, weight wasn’t the only thing Weight Watchers shed.

WW started in 1963 when a homemaker in Queens invited friends to talk about dieting and to support one another. That circle of chairs turned into one of the most iconic weight loss programs in the world.

At its peak, WW stood for:

👉 Human connection

👉 Supportive community

👉 Clear structure

It wasn’t just a program- it was a lifestyle. A place people felt they belonged.

⚖️

But by 2015, attendance dropped. Competitors rose. WW panicked. They rebranded as “wellness,” launched a sleek app, and leaned into AI and tracking tools.

They gained tech- but lost their soul.

The very thing that made them special- the people, the meetings, the sense of “we’re in this together” – disappeared. And so did their place in the market.

⚖️

In healthcare, I see this too often. Great care alone isn’t enough. If your brand doesn’t connect emotionally, if people don’t feel something when they hear your name- you risk fading into the background.

⚖️

Your brand is more than a logo or slogan. It’s the clarity of your messaging. The tone of your website. The feeling people get from your visuals, your words, your presence. When every piece aligns, people don’t just notice- they remember.

At Better Co., we help healthcare organizations build brands that connect deeply with patients, families, and staff. Because strong emotional connections don’t just build loyalty- they build trust and long-term success.

If you’re ready to create a brand that resonates with the people you serve, let’s talk. We’d love to help you become the one they choose- again and again.
