Last Sunday night, I took my kids to TopGolf. We played a few rounds, followed by some serious air hockey.
By 10PM, we were laughing our way toward the car when my son noticed something in the middle of the road.
An iPhone 15.
Just lying there- face down, still intact. A car could’ve crushed it in a second. We scooped it up and saw it was locked. My daughter pulled up the emergency contact and texted: “We found your phone – please reach out.”
The ride home turned into a debate:
“What if nobody claims it?”
“Could we sell it?”
“What would we do with the money?”
By the time we pulled into our driveway, my son had mentally spent the imaginary profits.
That night, the phone stayed silent. Part of me quietly hoped no one would reach out.

The next afternoon, the phone rang.
The man on the other end had a thick accent. English wasn’t his first language, and he wasn’t sure where he’d lost the phone.
He said he was an Uber Eats driver, weaving through Baltimore on his motorcycle all night, racing between deliveries. He gave just enough details to convince me he was the real owner. We agreed to meet in a supermarket parking lot that evening.
After putting my 5-year-old to bed, my older son and I headed out. It was late. I was tired. But we were both curious – and oddly invested.
In the dimly lit parking lot, two young men sat on the curb, their shadows stretching behind them. We felt a mix of anticipation and hope. How would this go?
We held our breath as one of them spotted the phone.
He smiled, stood up, said “thank you,” shook my son’s hand… and just like that, disappeared into the night.

We stood there a moment longer.
The silence said a lot.
