Stretching the truth

A few months ago, I got a gift card to Stretch Zone. One session in, I felt looser – and surprisingly refreshed.

Weeks later, while scrolling online, an ad popped up for a stretch place. I thought, time to use that gift card again, and booked myself a slot.

When I arrived, the receptionist looked at me confused. “Are you sure you have an appointment today?” I quickly checked my phone, noticing I had booked Stretch Studio*, but was standing inside Stretch Zone

I was annoyed at myself – how did I miss that subtle difference? Seeing ‘Stretch’ in the name, I’d assumed it was the same place.

I called Stretch Studio, feeling terrible I’d be late. A calm voice answered: “Oh, this mix-up? Happens all the time.”

I paused.

That wasn’t just a casual mix-up, it was a sign of something bigger. A branding failure staring at me right in the face.

The place I’d mistakenly booked was only 10 minutes away. So I jumped in the car and went for it. But the stretch? Flat. No spark. No relief. Nothing like that first time when I felt truly renewed.

Inside Stretch Zone, where the difference is felt.

This week, back at Stretch Zone, lying on the table as my muscles loosened, I asked the technician, “Do you ever talk about how you’re different from the other stretch place down the street?”

She blinked, confused. “No, not really.”

That blank look said it all. No wonder these two brands blend into one.

If your business sounds like the competition, customers won’t notice you – no matter how good you are.

You don’t need to tear down the competition – just show what sets you apart. Start with your front-line team – the ones closest to your clients, where the difference is felt. Whether it’s your receptionist or just you, that role is your secret weapon.

Make sure staff can clearly share:

➡️ What makes your approach different

➡️ How your service improves lives

➡️ Real success stories

➡️ Why your work matters

If I got confused, how many others are too?

Clarity isn’t a luxury – it’s survival.

Without it, you fade into the background.

If everything in your business feels easy - you’re probably not growing. Growth isn’t supposed to feel easy. It stretches you, and that’s how you know it’s working. It happens when you hire before you’re ready, spend before returns are certain, sell before it’s perfect, and lead before you feel ready. Growth is uncomfortable. And it’s supposed to be.

What’s one place you’re playing it safe - and ready to stretch?
