I’m told kids spend less time with you as they get older. So when my son asked me to go to an Orioles game, I went.
Not because I love baseball. Honestly, I spent most of the game completely lost.
Meanwhile, my 8th grader explained everything to me like we’d switched roles for the night- the scoreboard, the stats, even why a player named Cowser gets moo’d when he comes up to bat.
Then halfway through the game, I looked a few sections over and saw a grown man in a snorkel and flamingo float spraying an entire section with a garden hose. People stood there with their hands up waiting to get soaked.
I finally pointed over and asked my son what that was.
“Oh. That’s the Bird Bath.”
After the game, I walked over to the Bird Bath guy and asked how this whole thing started.
He told me the Orioles expanded the bullpen, which left that section with terrible seats nobody wanted. So the Orioles turned the section over to him.
And somehow, those seats became some of the more expensive ones in the stadium.
The Orioles didn’t fix the seats.
They just figured out how to make people feel lucky to sit there.
